We are consume a part of the media everyday in different ways through print, broadcast or e-media. I thought I should record how much I consume in a week and which type I prefer to use the most.
On my way to college, I would usually buy ‘i’ as it was affordable and I loved how simple it was set out and written. Since starting university, I haven’t brought any newspapers. I think it’s because i’m getting lazier, but then I realised that I don’t buy them because they’re quite frankly a waste of money. Surely we don’t all read every single article there is in a newspaper? Right? I just don’t see a point of me buying something where I’m going to skip most of the pages that have no interest to me. So, instead, I read news articles online. It’s much easier that way as I can read them on the go, any time of the day, news is updated more regularly on the web, it’s free (well internet isn’t but it saves me having to pay daily for a newspaper) but most importantly, i am able to CHOOSE what I want to read.
However, saying this, I am a huge fan of magazines, especially fashion magazines as they include things in my area of interest. I have a magazine collection of about 110 magazines containing Vogue (UK&US), Elle (UK&US), Company, Grazia, Glamour, Cosmopolitan and Look. This is my favourite form of print which I will gladly pay for as I feel like I am getting value for money from the quality of the paper and the level of professionalism of the magazines. If I have enough money, I usually buy 3-5 magazines a month. This week I only brought Grazia. I don’t go on the magazine websites as much because I prefer holding the magazine in my hands and seeing the glossy images rather than seeing them from a laptop screen. So in general, I read more magazines than newspapers.
I’m not a fan of watching TV, in fact, I probably watch TV once a week. Usually, I watch the news on an Iranian channel called ‘Manoto1′, that covers both international news as well as news about Iran which we don’t hear about on UK television. I also watch a bit of Sky Sports with my brother, but whilst watching it, I have no clue as to what they are saying as I’m not keen on sports.
This is my favourite media platform. I use the internet every single day, whether it’s on my phone or on the laptop. I tend to go online to do internet shopping, watching videos on Youtube, reading articles on The Guardian or the BBC, checking Facebook, jumping from one link to another. I consume this the most as it’s probably the most addictive but it’s also a convergence of all the type of media into one medium, so I’m able to access anything and everything through the web!
I use my iPhone possibly every second of the day. The main apps that I use are social ones such as Whatsapp, Instagram, Facebook, Tumblr, KIK, Twitter, Viber and Skype. How great is that? I can connect to anyone, anywhere in the world, through my phone for free so I’m able to contact my friends and family all over the world. I recently discovered an app called ‘News360′ and I’m obsessed with it! It allows me to choose which type of news I would like to read about, and then for each piece of news, I am given links to articles about that certain topic by different sources. I check it every morning and every night as it is updated regularly so I’m never bored when I open the app! Whatsapp and Instagram have become my addiction so I use them the most.
In general, I consume more apps and online related media as it’s easily accessible, free and great for on the go. My least consumption is broadcast and newspapers, but then again, the same articles in newspapers are available online and the broadcasts on TV can be accessible online too. Online media is taking over my life.
